Knowingly or rather unknowingly, whilst working at locations like huts, village streets, lanes in perspective, buildings changed my view from becoming an artist to envisioning myself as an Architect. But life had something else in store for me. Admissions to Architecture school did not materialize, and instead I walked the familiar path to ‘Sir J.J. Institute Of Applied Arts, Mumbai.’ It’s here for four years I honed on my artistic skills under the excellent guidance from skilled professors. It was no wonder that a gradual interest in creation of Visual forms, Pictorial forms and Designing developed.
My academic years saw the introduction to ‘Visual communication’ as a subject. Luckily I realized the potential in this field. You can express your views through visuals. Visual language plays an important role in communicating the idea quickly and effectively to any community or category of people. Keeping this in mind I started concentrating on illustration rather than advertising.
Another phase in my life came when I started working after graduation, which involved rubbing shoulders with them ad guys. Honestly, I didn’t fit in here. And hence started working as a Freelance Illustrator and Designer for many publishers and publications.
The third phase came about when I offered my services as a Professor at J. J. Institute of Applied Arts, Mumbai. Guiding them and sharing my views, I helped the Bachelor of Fine Art students as well as the Post graduate students. An examiner, paper setter, and several seminars to my name, I would love to say I contributed to the best of the students making it through.
It was also during my tenure as a professor that I had a chance to work on a myriad of designing projects and assignments, and a new system to the setting visual forms. An unending project, but with the help of visual forms, I aim to introduce their application in the proper media.
As an artist I feel it’s a responsibility to reach to the audience through our art, whether to convey an idea or a message. There are a lot of ways to do it, be it through communication art or performing art, just make sure your piece is creative and challenging.
So, that’s me. And my journey. Inspiring, involving, selecting, teaching, working, designing, challenging!
